I bought a mogul a couple of years ago with the vanderbilt tender and I have never been happy with it, looked odd! Late last year Bill at Bay Models told me he had a mogul with a tender from the 2-4-0 that he was fitting out with a Phoenix sound sysytem, liked the sound of it and bought it. As a result I have now have 2 moguls with the short tender and a 2-4-0 with a vanderbilt, what do you think?
It all works for me and that Phoenix sound is superb. I need advice though, what's the best way to remove LGB decals? to get everything matching.
Cheers,
Kim

Yes, that's what I'm wary of. I did hear that brake fluid was one way but I could do with someone who's done it to give me a shout. I've asked Bill to ask visitors to the shop who bash loco's, we'll get there eventually!
It was suggested to me to use a product called Eagle One Nevr Dull. It comes in a tin and inside are wadding material you use to polish things. But it surprisingly also works pretty well on LGB lettering. It worked for my old C&S mogul. However you have to be careful. Too much pressure and elbow grease will start working away the black background color. Take it easy and give it some time. I was surprised how well it worked. And I have a bunch of the product left to keep my rims shinny
The old C&S mogul is the one with the plow (#345).
Warning. The C&S mogul was old (1988 vintage). LGB may have changed paints and chemicals over the years and I'm not exactly sure if this product still works on the newer stuff, which your equipment definitely is. I haven't tried it since LGB now makes an undecorated mogul. That would be #315 in the photo above (had to get a silver boiler front though).

In relation to LGB Decals, I found out by accident, that methylated spirits (known as denatured alcohol in the US) works to remove decals, but not the underlying paint. I laid a loco I was servicing on a piece of cloth on the bench, not knowing my son had poured metho on it to clean something else. The metho softened the decals slowly, so when I lifted the loco the decals on the one side were soft and rubbed off. With one side clean, I then had to clean the other side, so I did, using a piece of clean cloth and gently rubbing for a few minutes. Nothing happens at first, but then they just flake off. This was an older LGB loco, but in good condition.
Good luck.

I'm just off out to buy some meths, I would never have guessed that meths was the answer. I'll give it a try and let you all know the reults.
I'm off to pick up a 'normal' mogul tomorrow, Rio Grande, snow plow and bear trap!! Post a pic or three when I get it home - weather permitting that is, could have snow on the way, we certainly have the gale at the moment. Not Gail (she' off out on a girly night) - gale!!
