No I havent gotten a K27 yet, stupid side tracked brain! I blaim Bachmann for naming there old D&RG passenger set's parlor car RICO. I got bored one day and started looking up my rollingstock car numbers a couple months back and since have been obsessing over RGS information. Who cares about the D&RG who I have allways been interested in look theres this new information infront of me that i dont know! lol! Silly odd me!
Anyway yeah I bought an Annie, first impressions are meh.... i mean details through the roof but you can tell at a glance what parts they also use on the big haulers plus IMO the Annie engine vs my Big Hauler engines feels cheep. im scared to pick it up for fear somthing might break off. Its like they went the extra yard as far as details but skipped on the quality... just my opinion! (im nitpicky!)
So yeah enjoy the pic's, used a real camera for these but its 1am so the lighting wasnt that great so stand back for the craptabulistic pics!

Thanks! They are nice coupler's I used to use them back in the day when I was into HO. That said they are still a pain in the butt to put together lol they work better than the bachmann couplers though and I was able to get some to replace the fake front coupler on my other Big Hauler (D&S 177) & Annie (RGS 25) 4-6-0's I just had to remove the pilot and cut off the fake coupler mount. I hope when I get my track setup outside I will be able to do a little double heading
#791 they are for LGB Mogul & Bachmann 4-6-0. They come with instructions on how to install on both and show how you need to remove the fake coupler mount and also modify the new coupler mount but its very easy I just used a razor blade. Took me about 15-20 minutes per engine, If your good at putting the couplers together you might be able to do it faster lol
Oh yeah and you will need to bend the hose thingamajigers up some on the couplers or just cut it off because it will catch on the tip of the pilot
Thank's for the info, I will check my box of KD's see what I have. Next trip to Reno I will take a picture or two of my ( MDC ) RGS 0401 that I did around 1990-91 ( Back in the old day's before afordable digital ) it has Body mounted KD's.

Not a stupid question at all. When I started my G scale coupler update several years ago I didn't even know Kadee made couplers for G scale. But now we use Kadees exclusively.
The best advice I can give is check out the Kadee website. They have a conversion chart that pretty much covers anything you'd ever run.

Depending on the scale you run, you might want to look into Kadee's #1 scale couplers. These tend to look better with 1:29 and 1:32 scales. I use "G" scale couplers because I want the look of standard gauge couplers on narrow gauge equipment.

Another thing to look out for is body mounted versus truck mounted (sometimes referred to as Talgo) couplers. Body mount is the most realistic, and is the most similar to the standard HO #5 style of installation. However you need wide curves in large scale to use body mounts. Although body mounts would work for us we chose to go with truck mounted couplers just incase we ever wanted to run trains on a friends layout with limited radius curves.
Mr_Ash, nice looking trainsets. I really like the plow on "Bumblebee" #179. Did you have to make the pilot cuts in it? Did it come with a coupler installed? I have two of the C&S plows for the LGB mogul (both also obtained from eBay). Only one came with a Kadee installed. I'm planning on cutting the second one to add a coupler

The plow doesnt have a coupler but there is what looks like a small mount for one, not sure what type of coupler it will take
As far as mounting the plow it pretty much just snapped on and I glued it inplace, The guy I got it from off ebay said he also had it mounted on a Bachmann 4-6-0. removing the plow is a bit prototypical now because the whole pilot has to be removed

I think they were Champ decal's I got in 1992 at my LHS, and yes It's a B-Mann coach that came from a AT&SF set The engine has suffered a lot damage due to 4 or 5 move's it's in storage but was redone to RGS #20. when I'm done I will have all three 4-6-0 that came from the F&CC. I didn't expect it to take 15 year's finnish the project. But now that I'm retired ( so my wife thinks ) I mite have time to devote to building trains. I did find some PFE decal's to add to my reffer train.
That caboose doesnt look to bad size wise behind that bachmann coach I'm going to have to try and find one of those to replace my craptastical RGS bachmann bobber to go with the RGS 25 Annie (im trying to detail it to look more like 20)
and since the topic is new engines & cabeese might as well post a pic of another Annie I snagged off Ebay last week, I forgot I should have posted it last reply lol it was an undecorated model. Aside from the tender light & sound not working and the wheels being super dirty after some cleaning and a little soldering (the wires that go to the engine got pulled out inside the tender) everything works and Id say she runs smoother,quieter and stronger than RGS 25
RGS 25 sat on my fireplace mantel for about a month before its first run wich I thought was funny because its RGS... Made 1 lap around my 8' x 10' oval and when it got back around 2 pins from the side rods and 2 screws had fallen out
I found the pins but the screws were history, thankfully they were the same size as the screws that come with $2 eyeglass repair kits so that all got fixed quick and 25 runs fine now
Then last friday my sisters kid was over and we were running 25 because D&S 177 was getting worked on (was detailing 177 while I supervised him with teh control) and he got up and took off after the dog and the uncouple lever on the pilot got cought on his pants leg and he dragged the engine off the track like 2 feet and tripped onto the dog it was crazy! 3 of the lever holders broke off but i found the pieces and superglued them back inplace then painted the level bar & mounts gloss black for now looks good as new but you cant move the bar anymore.. ahh well... I got a bad feeling 25 is going to be an unlucky engine lol

I have a very good book on the RGS, It cost about $54. back in the 90's I will get the Title on my next trip to Reno (Doctor dependent ). maybe you can get a copy or find one at your local Libary. It has all you need to know about the RGS even come's with a map.

I took up all the bachmann track in my living room thats been out in a 10' x 8' oval since around christmas cleaned the living room and setup 12' x 8' oval with LGB R3 curves... Then I double headed a train with 2 Durango & Silverton big hauler engines (#179 w/plow & #177 w/balloon stack) 4 box cars and 8 passenger cars (4 LGB 4 Bachmann)
But yeah R3 curves seems to be the min radius that the front coupler can be used on :)
Mr. Ash I took the time last weekend ( 1min )to find my book on the RGS the title is SILVER SAN JUAN , THE RIO GRANDE SOUTHERN author is Mallory Hope Ferrell, my copy is a first edition. Copy righted in 1973. I don't think any of the infomation has changed since then the book is perty complet has 500 photo's and a inventory. I am not purest when it come to trains but this book realy helps keep things in order. Hope you can find a copy for yourself

Yep Silver San Juan is one of if not the definitive RGS book. But there are many newer and more available books out there on the RGS. Here's a pretty complete listing of RGS related books:

However once you start getting books on a railroad you're modeling...especially ones with nice clear pictures...well you start to see things in your models that need improving. I wonder if we'd even have painted up LGB coaches into San Juan green if I'd never read up on the D&RGW San Juan. I never knew there was anything other then Silverton Yellow until reading books

I also drove up to Flint Michigan to Crossroads Village to ride on the Huckleberry RR who were running D&RGW K27 464 with a string of wood coaches a couple of which came from RGS & D&RGW.
Oh yeah and I also got a few DVD's of films made in the 50's & 60's and also a bunch of newer stuff with Durango & Silverton and Cumbres & Toltec running freights and MOW stuff repainted as D&RGW Theres one I want to get that they filmed on cumbres & toltec that has there K27 repainted as RGS 455
Time to hit the books
