new indoor RR needed
Posted by dwbeckett on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 1:18 PM
OK the DNRR track plan stinks. I need some help with a new track plan. hears what I have to work with: 9' / 10' / 11.5' Dia, 4-#6 & 3-10'dia switch's (3pairs+1), 1-19% crossover can be eliminated ,three bridges-2 at least need be used (2&4 ft). boxs of strait track 3-2-1. For space I have 20'X21' -420sq foot 2car side of 3 car garage. If I had a good easy cad sys (FREE) I would not be asking for HELP. Also I would like to be able to walk in and need a space for a folding table and chair's. BTW the current track plan will be up and running for the Holidays MY WIFE SAID SO. I NEED HELP. PICTURES OF CURRENT SPACE WILL BE POSTED NEXT WEEK.

The head is gray, hands don't work , back is weak, legs give out, eyes are gone, money go's and my wife still love's Me.

Try the good old fashioned "dog bone" layout for starters... Here I have taken your dimensions and produced this using a draw program I got free with my computer in 1996!!!

The green is floor, the yellow is raised benchwork. The curves are 8 feet diameter. There is room in the centre for your table and chairs, and the track should be easy to reach.

CABBAGE, Thanks for your input, however I don't have any 8ft dia. track and I am thinking along the lines of a " L " shape

Wow your looking to use some wide turns in a tight space for that kind of curviture. If your min dia are 9 or 10 ft, I would suggest a loop of some sort with an operation island in the center and a duck under or lift bridge for access. Maybe a double track 9 and 10 ft dia with a small yard on the inside wall?

An L would likely be limited to some sort of out and back, point to point layout, I considerd doing that but eventually decided it was too limiting, so I am currently planning a loop setup for mine.

OK more Info: current is a 2 track main 10/11.5 with a two bridge duck under. I found a 'L' layout for "O" gauge that use's a 12x16 space and I hoping I can convert it to 16X21 and allow the use on mixed 10/11.5 curves w 9' for sidings. BTW 9 and 10 curves only leave 3" clearance.

There is nothing to say that you can not buy some track and just lay it in your back yard and then move it about until it p;eases the eye remember the 10tf rule if it looks good at that distance then you are ok. As for curves remember 2-6-0  2-8-0 and bigger run better on R3 radius 8ft diamiter smaller rad put a lot of torque on the moters but if you are going for 0-4-0 and such like them smaller rad ok. But again remember the size of rolling stock 40ft wagons look a bit naff on radius 1    Hope this helpsSmile [:)]

OK -try again...

The blue curves are 9 feet diameter, the red curves are 10 feet diameter, the green is floor. The scale of the drawing is 1cm =1 foot.

Your going to need some duck-unders and access holes there, general rule of thumb is never build anything trackwise that you cannot reach, so access becomes a big design criteria

YES I do realise that!!!

The design was simply to show how 9 and 10 feet diameter curves would fit. It is similar to the one both Matthew and I are building for his bedroom -except the two return loops fold over each other to give a lower and raised railway routes. This will give him; his station, his MPD, (and especially) -his Gas Coking plant...
