Hmmm Track Ballast
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, September 30, 2007 4:24 PM

Hello I was wondering what to use for track ballast. I found this old mortar stuff that is sort of like quikrete but a lot finer. Could I use this for my working ballast? Thanks

I used a product called Post Mix, which is similar to Quikrete, to cover a mound of dirt that one portion of my track runs on top of around a curve and have had no problems with it.  Just don't put the mortar on too thick.  A light dusting should be enough, depending on what is under your track.  The first time it becomes moist it will harden.

I sprinkled a heavy dusting of Post Mix on the sides of the dirt pile so it wouldn't wash away.  Obviously, appearance is not my main concern.

the ballast in the pic, is 1/4" Ledge sand and it works very well if you ask me.
