I have a lemon Athearn SD70ACe that apparently has warped trucks. I emailed Athearn and they said they could send me some new trucks to install myself or I could send it to Athearn for repair. Im sure someone on this forum has sent theirs to Athearn to have it fixed and I was wondering how long it took or if theyve even got their loco back yet. Im afraid if I install the trucks myself Ill break something.
In case you haven't subscribed to Athearn's weekly e-newsletter, they are in the process of moving. Their latest news is that their phones are not yet operating at the new location, and they're still in the process of moving and everything is still in the packing boxes, so now is probably not a good time to be sending something to them for repair.

Their web site says to expect a 30-45 day delay in correspondence and repairs.
I sent mine in and got New ones within about a 1 to 1 1/2 weeks. They fixed the problem and the unit runs flawlessly.

Funny how this problem just keeps going. I had them send me the trucks and we repaired our own. Since we live in NC/SC, freight takes about 4 to 5 working days and it would have been close to a month if we had sent them in.
Also, I kept the old trucks for parts. Doing this work is also a good time to add sound if you want.

AFIAK this was a first run issue and was corrected for the second run. More than likely older stock finding its way to end users through the distribution chain.

I guess I've been in this hobby so long that the months blur into years. But to me, it seems like "yesterday" that the big news all over the model railroading news was Athearn's "big move" a few years back. I wonder if Athearn owns its buildings today or is renting space.

Yep....old news, sure caught me out! There have been a few of these recently where year old threads have been dredged back to the top.
