The new PATH World Trade Center Station and the the Hudson Tubes...

Well, they were among some of the grubbiest, smelly and, in those days smoke filled, pieces of junk one could imagine! No one that rode those roach coaches (I saw one in a PATH train back in 1977-big S.O.B., too) missed them when the port authority bought new cars in the '60s and early 70's and no one missed those when they were retired, either. At least there is no more smoking in the Hudson Tubes, or anywhere else, but one has to run the smokers' gauntlet to get to the trains. Oh, yes DO NOT BRING YOUR CAMERA! It will get you arrested!

You could smoke on the subway back then?

The Hudson Tubes were owned by the PRR if I remember correctly. The Old tube trains are visible in the Mural at Newark Penn Station

The Hudson & Manhattan RR was always an independent operation.  A large part of the line between Journal Square and Newark was owned by PRR and used by H&M/PATH under trackage rights.  Because of this arrangement, some of the 1200-series cars were owned by PRR and actually classified MP-51's by PRR.
