I was working on a beat-up postwar Lionel NW-2 in seaboard colors, and was putting the front truck back on. I may have been overtightening the screw, because as I was tightening it, the head of the screw came off! I looked in the hole, and the part that was left was in pretty far. I have never had this happen before, and don’t know what to do. If any of you help, that would be great. I am on vacation currently so I don’t have many tools to work with.
It seems entirely possible and in fact likely that it wasn't you who overtightened the screw, but the screw having been overtightened in the past. It might have been weakened, and you putting that screw back in was just the last straw for it.As for what to do now? I'm afraid it's time to break out the drill and drill out the broken screw. Depending how well that goes, you'll either be buying a replacement screw from the Lionel parts supplier of your choice, or if the threads get ruined from the drilling, you may need to re-tap the hole and get a larger screw to match the new thread.-Ellie
Thank you for the info! I actually just ordered an emitre new truck including the new screw, which also solves the problem that the coupler is missing, and its on the way.
That sure is another way of solving the issue!Hope the truck swap goes smoothly-Ellie
