Thank you all for your advice. Yes, I will be more patient. And thanks to Mitch I can make this work! I'll let you know how we do. Dave
Okay, here's the deal:
1) Get yourself an American Flyer track trip:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ORIGINAL-AF-2-RIVET-696-TRACK-TRIP-CONTACTOR-FOR-759-760-582-584-SIGNALS-/251417413970
2) See this wiring diagram:
http://www.lionel.com/media/servicedocuments/71-2727-250.pdf
Wire the two contacts on the 696 track trip in the same manner as contacts 2 and 3 in the Lionel wiring diagram. Wire the rest of the contacts in the same fashion as shown in the Lionel diagram.
When the train passes over the track trip, the semaphore should activate.
Hope this helps!
Mitch
dkapteyn Im a first time poster. Does anyone answer these things or do you have to be in the "in " crowd?

Ya gotta be patient my friend. Sometimes you have to wait for the right person to read the post which may not happen overnight. The rest may not know the answer.
By the way, the only thing I find annoying is some peoples inability to let us know if our suggestions were helpful in any way. A simple "Thank You!" costs nothing.
aboard!

Trains, trains, wonderful trains. The more you get, the more you toot!
I don't think its "ignoring" a new poster. The first time I posted I got several answers to my question that were helpful. I think its more your question needs someone familiar both with the wiring of this Lionel signal and how the equivalent insulated outside rail that one would use in 3-rail to trigger the signal. Perhaps you could provide some additional info on these and one of the electrical boffins on the list could help.

Does anyone know if I can make the Lionel Model 6-12727 Semaphore work on an American Flyer 2 rail track? Can I buy the American Flyer track clips to make it work? Thanks, Dave
