once you remove the two screws, you may have to twist the sides of the car and the top will pop off.

If these are Rail King cars there are two screws underneath them one on each end. The trucks may be covering them but you should still be able to get to them. Remove the two screws and firmly pull the top off slowly and you may even need to pop a corner of with a small screw driver. If these are Premier cars unfortunately I cannot help you.

go the the MTH site. you should be able to get a parts break down that will show you how to take the cars apart. I did this with my M1a.
