Hi Bob,  I have a KW and I think the U is the common terminal and there is an A side and a B side.

Beware the inconsistency in Lionel transformer terminal labeling:  Transformers with multiple variable outputs, like the Z and ZW use U to designate the common terminal, which generally should be connected to the outside rails.  However, transformers with one variable output, like the 1033, use U for the terminal which generally should be connected to the center rail.  (A or B to the outside rail for the 1033.)  The early CW-80 has an eccentric arrangement like no other transformer.

What transformer do you have?

Variable to the center.  That makes sense for use with insulated track sections.  Sometimes it just takes my brain a bit to function.  Thanks.

Okay,  I have been at this a long time but I am rewiring my layout and don't want to screw up.  Does it make any difference if the transformer to track connection is made one way or the other as long as it is consistent?
