You confirmed some of my concerns, I just didn't see why a hobbyshop would swap the powered shell onto a non-powered unit because the non-powered would be cheaper. I know that these were bought brand new, not used, so I was curious. Thanks for the reply and time!
The hint that something is wrong is that the "dummy" has the same number as the powered "A" unit. That means that some previous owner put the Comet shell on another non powered frame. Gilbert never made a non powered Comet. It is very possible that a hobby shop owner did this or purchased this loco from a hobbyist that did the modifications. Who or when this modification occurred will never be known.
Hi. I have a 466 Comet Powered A-unit and a 466 Non-powered A-unit that my father bought new. I seem to remember on the box that it said 466 Comet Dummy. I no longer have the boxes and I know that my father never modified these trains. Everyone I've talked to told me that Flyer never made a non-powered Comet. If you guys can shed any light on the subject, as to whether or not it was a factory mix-up or a hobby shop screw up, I'd appreciate it greatly.
