It will work just fine with a Lionel contactor.  It will probably work more reliably with an insulated rail ("control rail").  Marx used a copper channel that fit over an outside rail and was insulated from the outside rail, to get the same effect as a control rail but a rougher ride for the train, since the channel made a sort of speed bump.

Marx Semaphore

I'll be receiving a Marx semaphore shortly.  It's coming without any accessories. Will it work on the Lionel O27 track with a Lionel Contactor or would I have to get the Marx attachments?  As always, many thanks.
