A new speaker won't fix the random activation but it could have a loose wire or just a bad cone. That would make a big difference in the sound quality.

sir james I

After cleaning, try a new speaker. They are cheap and squeaky.

Boy. You got me there. All these years, and I would never have suspected this problem:

"performs perfectly when standing. However, when in motion the horn and bell controls don't seem to work. On occasion the horn will sound and the bell will work but for the most part, the horn sounds randomly when in motion with no activation."

could be solved with a new speaker.

Oh, and conventional, relay-operated units will bridge dirt connectivity  issues a whole lot better than electronic triggers will.

I'm sure the track can use a cleaning .... however all other horns and bells are fine. I have a Lionel Steam Sounds boxcar which operates perfectly on the same track. Horns and whistles on other Lionel work fine as well as Williams horn and bell. I have to check the wires .... i did have to solder the wire from the roller contact.

Have you cleaned the track? Dirty track can make almost any whistling tender sound off, even with no whistle control on the transformer. Check all wheel contact areas and check the center roller pick-ups also.

I'm hoping the forum can shed some light on a problem with a Trainsounds Boxcar. I bought a Lionel        6-26860 Santa Fe Trainsounds boxcar several months ago on ebay which performs perfectly when standing. However, when in motion the horn and bell controls don't seem to work. On occasion the horn will sound and the bell will work but for the most part, the horn sounds randomly when in motion with no activation. I called Lionel and they were no help.  I also find there is a lot of static with the horn ... again when in motion.  I plan to clean the contacts again and check the wheels for dirt ... any other suggestions??

Old (8 years) thread on that part number: http://cs.trains.com/ctt/f/95/p/59348/739235.aspx#739235

If you can get past the 50CPS versus 60CPS, or the clueless in Switzerland who claims they are now 60 MEGA hertz.....ouch....good comments on contacts and roller cleaning, wire issues.

This unit also seems to be sensitive to power irregularities between adjoining sections.

Based upon what I read, there is probably a reason they sold your unit on ebay.
