Are you dealing with the 6-14098 "Mainline Auto Crossing Gates", which have 5 wires? If so, you can operate them from an insulated control rail by using a relay with SPDT contacts, which will duplicate the operation of the 153C or 153IR.

I prefer insulated rail too (it is cheaper and more reliable) but the Lionel gates do not have instructions for wiring in that manner, and the number of wires they have also seems consistent with the fact they cannot simply operate off the third rail. Why this is I am not sure but with other accessories (the traditional large crossing gate, MTH crossing flashers) I have used the insulated rail technique with good results. Thanks for the info on teh 153IR.
Yes, they can be set up for pair operation but for a crossing I like using the insulated track method better. If a train sits at a crossing the 153IR will raise the gate because it does not detect motion, but the insulated track will keep the gate and lights flashing while the train is motionless.

I have a set of Lionel scale crossing gates and I have one of the 153IR controllers. I would like to be able to run the trains in both directions and so I would like the gates to be appropriately triggered irrespective of the direction from which the train originates. Can the Lionel 153IR controllers be used in pairs, so this way the gates are triggered if the train comes from either direction? Thank you in advance.
