OK... it looks like your set is all ready to run except for the rusty track.  You can clean it up some with Scotchbrite pads - don't use steel wool or sandpaper.

Basic maintenance - clean & lube the engine(the cars are maintenance-free) - is all you will need.

If you sell it, it won't really bring in much, maybe $100.  There are just too many out there, and many in new or like new condition.

There were a lot of different trains made by Lionel in 1976, the "Spirit" train(loco, 13 cars and a caboose) was sold a-la-carte(separate sale) and never in a set.

Post some photos, or at least some numbers off of all the items, to help us help you identifying what you have.  It probably just needs servicing & cleaning, not restoration, if it's been in storage.

You are way too broad in your description. Is the box they are in the original one to the set? Numbers are key here, so if the box is original the number on it would be very useful. Also helpful would be the numbers on the locomotive and freight cars. Or if possible, pictures would be great.

I look forward to seeing what you have!

Hello

I have a full lionel  train set which inclues the tracks speed gage and all the cars in one large box  that I received as a kid back in 76.  i recently found the box in my parents attic a few years ago and either want to sell it or restore it. Any suggestions on either would be great.

Thank you.
