Norfolk & Western J Class #611
Posted by mech1 on Monday, November 2, 2009 4:08 PM

Maybe someone can help me with this question. I have 2 different Norfolk & Western J Class #611 and matching tenders, both made by Lionel. One set is very old from the '60s. It has a red stripe. The other I aquired fairly recently (2 yrs. ago) This set has a brown stripe. I'm just wondering if the newer set is also conventional or could it be comand controled. How can I tell? What if any, are the differences between the two?  I know there are very many knowledgeable people here, so I'm hoping someone can help.

Thank you,

Larry

I'd love to see a list of every 3 rail N&W J made. MTH, Williams and I think at least one other company has made them. Plus, overall how many times has Lionel released a N&W J? How many in 027,,, how many in scale?

Back in 82 there was $400 budgeted for me for trains. Carrs hobby in Duluth had the 611 set with 5 passenger cars for $700 but would not sell only the engine and tender. I told my mom it would be easy to sell off the passenger cars. She didn't believe me so that $400 went to our church who had enough money. I easily could have sold the passenger cars and I would still have that 611 J in my collection today.

Modeling the "Fargo Area Rapid Transit" in O scale 3 rail.
