I've seen modelers do somewhat the opposite - paint the whole item in a white mortar color - then paint it brick red - then scratch out the mortar lines with an old hobby knife. - looked like tuckpointing.

In a nutshell. Base coat everything in flat black, makes missed areas disappear. Paint brick color. Used thinned white latex paint 50/50 as a mortar wash. Let dry. Use light steel wool to remove highlighed white areas. Use a wash of alchol / india ink to tone down the white.
Took a piece of DPM modual, gave this a shot. Very easy to create desired effects. Have started a whole building that has all brickwork painted but no mortar. Am very happy with the results so far. Very very good artical.
