My visit to L&N Days '07, Berea Kentucky
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, June 2, 2007 3:19 PM

Hey ya'll its been awhile since I posted here last, I got really busy with end of the semester stuff at seminary; alls well that ends well I guess;

Grade Report:

  • Pastoral Counseling A-
  • Hebrew B- (yea!!!)
  • Mentored Ministry; is given pass-fail, I got my credits out of it.
  • Religion & Politics (Independent Study) pass-fail, and I got my credits

Anyways, I took my son to the 8th Annual L&N Days in Berea, KY and we had a great time, its basically 2 or 3 HO displays, and 1 Lionel display (all pretty simple), and then there are the folks selling trains.  Not to big of an a affair but around here its about all we get.  Anyways, as my son and I were looking at all the stuff we couldn't afford I started talking to a gentleman from around Elizabethtown, KY.  We had the usual banter about trains etc, but the whole time my son (5 yrs) kept eyeing an O gauge church that he had on his table, he had $40 on it which really was a steal but was out of my budget for today, so I basically put it out of my mind.  As we kept talking he asked my about my church and seminary and stuff, and in a few minutes he reached over and took the price tag off and handed me the church!  I couldn't believe it, I asked if he was sure and I even offered to give him what was in my pocket which was about $15 which he quickly refused.  He just looked at my son, and told him, "You enjoy that ok?"  My son's eyes were as big and bright as silver dollars.  I got his and his wife's name and address and I'm going to send them a very nice thank you card.  I still really can't believe it.

Anyways I just wanted to share that.  You can see it in the picture below, also in there is the NYC caboose that I picked up for $15 which was actually in my bugdet.  That just made my day!

That was a very nice gesture on that man's part. Congratulations on your end of semester grades. I can't imagine having to take Hebrew.

Yes indeed it sure was very nice, very generous.  My son loves seeing it all lit up on our benchwork.

And thanks on the grades.  Hebrew was definetly one of the hardest courses I've had in my 3 years here in seminary, it operates wrong on so many levels.  One thing that's nice is all the verbs are built off of 3 consonant stems/roots, and normally the things that change are the prefixes, suffixes, and the vowels (which are actually dots and dashes under the letters).  So most times if you can recognize your root, then the prefixes and suffixes become pretty evident.  The memorization is what really stunk, 20 plus words every other week, and I just ended up forgetting previous lists by the time the next list was tested on.  I now know the real meaning of "oy vey!"  Wink [;)]
