MTH Upgrade Kit Question.
Posted by jimhaleyscomet on Monday, May 14, 2007 10:34 AM

On the MTH website they have a $?? upgrade kit (see the following link)

https://extranet.mth-railking.com/storest/detail.asp?sid=52&cart=580625

Has anyone used one of these kits?  Do they work only on PS/1 engines or on any engine?  They charge a $25 deposit.  Does anyone know the final cost?

The kit is designed to be used with PS-1 loco's but should work with any flywheel equipped can motored engine.  The usual board cost was $200 (MTH Club members may have gotten a discount).  You will also need a full DCS set up to download a sound/control set into the loco (kit will include a blank board).  You will also be gutting the old loco down to the chassis/motor assembly.  Everything else is replaced, lighting harness/couplers/smoke units.  The flywheel tach may also be an issue as the flywheel on your existing loco may not be an exact match for one of the printouts in the kit.  While this isn't brain surgery, it can be a pain in the * since the new boards will probably not match the old monting brackets and you will have to make up a wiring harness for the "peripherals".
