Few questions about AF Log Loader or new AF Log Loader by Lionel or MTH
Posted by pmilazzo on Monday, May 14, 2007 12:28 AM
I'm thinking about buying an AF, new Lionel/AF style log loader, or MTH's NO. 787 for our family layout and I have some questions:

1.) Will it work with Lionel's logs which are short and skinny? I already have the Lionel saw mill, so I would like to stay with that style log.
2.) Do you or can you dump the logs on the loader from either side of the loader?
3.) Is the modern one Lionel or MTH better than the post war one (reliable or quieter may be)?
4.) Any possible issues using it with Fastrack?

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have the Lionel version of the AF log loader. I've used several types of logs with it, including dowels I cut to length myself. Thinner logs are no problem. Somewhat thicker logs would be fine too. I don't have mine handy to measure what the maximum size would be.

It does only load from one side, however.

I don't know anything about the original or the MTH but the Lionel repro runs very smoothly.

DAVE, I have the log loader from Lionel the 787 runs great.  Use 3/8 dowel rods cut about 6-7 inches.

I've got the MTH version.  It operates nicely.  I can dump logs onto it from front or back,  both sides have a sloping ramp to the middle.  Keep it within arms reach tho, the logs don't always roll onto the lifter right and may need adjustment for the crane to pick them up.

I also have a 364 loader and have my track set up so I can load at one place, deliver to the other, reload the dump car, and deliver to the first loader again.
