NJ Hi Railers Open House Photos
Posted by NYC Fan on Monday, May 7, 2007 8:22 AM

I went to the NJ Hi Railers Open House in Paterson, NJ yesterday and took some photos. Those who couldn't make it should keep an eye out for their next open house and see in person some of the great work these guys are doing at their home layout in Paterson, NJ.

Thanks guys for a very enjoyable time!

Last I heard it was 185 F-E-E-T long by an average of 30 feet wide.

Check this video out - it appears to be one lap.

NYC fan,

Lots of good layouts in the area.  One place that is a must see is the New York Society of Model Engineers in Carlstadt.  While it is O Scale, 2 rail, they have a great layout.  It is open to the public a few times per year, but I believe they have arrangements to see it every week by appointment.

Funny you guys should mention that layout !! I've been watching trains run & building progress there now for a couple years !!  They have web-cams installed there & you can see the members working, & sometimes I've seen some guys taking too many breaks !! Laugh [(-D] (just kidding) !! Laugh [(-D] I'm so fascinated by all the bridges & the giant helix !! They were listing the layout at 185 feet, though it says they have a new 75 feet addition !! I really enjoy watching their that layout on the web-cams, & you can even talk to them on one of the web-cams, though I haven't tried that yet !! Hope you guys check it out more !!

Dennis,

Your correct.  I've been to Carlstadt and it is a masterpiece. It is a finely finished layout despite the fact that it is often being revised or redone.

Last year I went out to Ronkonkoma Long Island and visited the Central Operating Lines Layout.  This was closer in size to the NJ Hi Railers current layout and also an excellent layout.

IMHO, if you're in the metropolitan area, you shouldn't pass up the opportunity to attend an open house and see any of these great layouts.

The NJ Hi Railers have a whole additional space framed out for an expansion which will nearly double the O gauge layout space.  Their space seems almost "limitless."  Although that's not quite true, most of us would have run out of money long before we had purchased the 2x4's and plywood sheets it would take to fill their room.

I just noticed your location, passed by there plenty of times.  My sister lives in Florida, NY and I used to live in Bogota, NJ.  Have a friend with a farm in upstate NY too, so as I say, been by Suffern plenty of times.  A friend of mine is one of the owners of The Train-Station not too far from you in Mountain Lakes, NJ.  They have LOTS of stuff, but not much layout as all the space is taken up with trains.

Also, I believe they have a O scale club that has shows and meetings in Parsippany, NJ.  I am not too sure about what all they have, just seen some advertisements.  Like I said, lots of great train stuff up that way.
