Shipping Squashes the Discount
Posted by Fred Bear on Monday, April 16, 2007 8:25 PM

OK, my local train store sells the UltraCal 30 for $9.00 for 8lbs. The discount houses sell the stuff in bulk for $24.00 for 50 lbs. Appears to be a no brainer until you look at the shipping. $14.00 for shipping from their place to West Virginia, so that takes the price up to $38.00 for 50bls. Still a bit of  break over the 8 lbs tubs, but not much. I'd rather give my local train shop the business, he's the guy that helps out when needed and gives me deals and otherwise is pretty darn good to all of us trying to set up layouts & displays. Jake

76 cents from the discount houses

$1.12 a pound from the local shop. 36 cents a pound, still don't think it's worth undercutting the local train shop. but... I guess if you had to buy 1000 lbs, that would be a difference.

The boxes you get in the hobby shop are only 2 lb. boxes or milk cartons & cost about 8 dollars. I just checked an old carton I have . Now if you can get it nearby, you can also save shipping !!

Thanks, John
