Vert-A-Pak Auto Rack Flat Car - Model Needed
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, April 15, 2007 10:02 PM

Hello from Colorado, My name is Tom Johnson, a mechanical engineer working for the railroad industry and currently performing historical research on Vert-A-Pak auto rack flat car. As part of this work, I would like to obtain a model Vert-A-Pak freight car to better understand the design and construction.

Please check your rolling stock for an example of this unique design freight car.

Thank you for your assistance from TTCI

Hello Grandpa Tom,

Can't help you with the freight car...but wanted to welcome you to the forum.  What part of Colorado are you in?  I'm in Denver....

The closest thing to the Vert-A-Pak Flats are the K-LINE Flat Cars with Aircraft Containers.

There is a thread for this on the Classic TRAINS forum that Grandpa Tom started.

Ready to run. plastic body Auto Racks in O Scale and O Gauge have been very limited until recently.

OK..Let me try this again, Grandpa Tom.  If we are talking about the same thing.....A freight car was developed by the auto industry, back about 1980, to transport cars in a closed area. " Vertical "  is the key word here. It looked like a box car and not a flat car. It had numerous doors on the side that swung down as a loading ramp. The cars were driven onto the doors and secured. The doors would close, putting the cars in a vertical position. There were brackets on the doors to hold the cars by their suspensions. The cars were loaded front end down. I believe the doors were hydraulic powered. These were used to transport Chevrolet Corsicas and Berettas. I have never seen a model of these cars, nor a picture.

This is NOT a Vert - A - PAK car. It looks similar. If you read the entire link below, you will see the reference to Vert - A - Pak  cars.

Go to www.corbis.com

Type in the search term Auto Boxcar and you will see a photo of an open Vert-A-Pak Car.
