Engine ?
Posted by traindaddy1 on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 10:00 PM

Once again, asking for advice.  I'm looking for a strong puller in the 2-4-2 or 4-4-2 class. Can be Post-war or Modern. Prefer Lionel. Any suggestion?

(A short answer can be by model or engine number) As always, many thanks.

For a 2-4-2, I'd suggest a Lionel 2034 or a Marx 666. The inexpensive 2034 has a much better motor than most 2-4-2s from the post war period. And the e-unit lever faces down, so no slot is present on the top of the boiler. Great puller too! No smoke unit.

The Marx 666 is also a grear puller, smooth runner, and inexpensive. These came with and without smoke units.

Modern Lionel 4-4-2s are very strong pullers and most times, good smokers. A bit pricier than the 2 locos above, but newer. I have 2 of these and both are excellent.

TRAINDADDY,

When I first entered the hobbey, I bought a NYC 2-6-4 Lionel (6-18606) of ebay for $62.00, one of my best pullers.  It is a traditional size not scale.  I can pull 20 + cars with it and have pulled 25.  Great little engine, smokes, great, was  made to immitate the 2037.  I hve bought 4 others since the first one, still run them.  Also a good engine is the newer 0-4-0 that Lionel just came out with, good pullers and smokers.

Hope this helps.

Laz57: Had my eye on a 2037 to compliment my 2035. We'll see!  Thanks.

That's a 2-6-4, not a 2-4-2 or a 4-4-2.
