Transformer Question
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, March 29, 2007 9:29 PM

Hello Everyone,

I searched the newbie section and performed a few searches.

Here's my current setup.

U28CG ATSF Standard O Freight Set w/TMCC
Trainmaster command base
Cab-1 Remote Controller
180-Watt PowerHouse Power Supply
TMCC Lockon

Anyway, am I missing out by not going with a ZW transformer in conjunction with the 180-Wattt powerhouse?  I'm under the assumption that I can continue to add additional 180-Watt powerhouse controllers as I grow my track and add locomotives/accessories???

I hope this isn't a stupid question......I'm planning a fairly large layout (over time) and just want to make sure I'm on the right track.

PowerHouse's just put out a constant 18 volts, not controllable.  If you plan to run ONLY command loco's this is fine.  The new ZW and TPC's allow you to adjust your output voltage which allows you to control non command equipped loco's.

That's the set-up I use.I run five different tracks. One powermaster and one powerhouse per track.I like the regular transformers but don't want to be reaching for handles. It works fine for me.The powermasters let me run conventional.

Thanks Chuck, Ed,

I don't really plan on operating anything non-TMCC at this time.  If anyone else has any feedback/comments, please let me know.  It's not that I'm trying to avoid the purchase of a ZW (or other type of transformer), but like Ed, I just don't see myself wanting to move handles etc.  I really love the CAB-1 remote and the freedom it gives me.

The big advantage to TMCC / new ZW combination is excellent low speed control of conventional engines.  Since you do not run conventional engines then I see no reason to need a ZW.  I have the new ZW and appreciate that I can set the handles at a certain voltage that limits top speed when I hand the remote to a child (this would also work on TMCC engines).
