LGB 650001 sound
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, February 23, 2007 8:52 PM

I am new to the hobby and just bought an LGB toy train set for my son to be in.  He will be born in 3 months.  I built a lay out about a foot down from the roof in his room and have the train all hooked up great.  The thing is the sound feature stinks.  Just a whoosh sound over and over...boring.  I am looking into the 650001 sound unit but the instruction on LGB stink as well... at least for a newbee...My question is I have a 20212 loco.  If I purchase the 650001 and hook it to the loco will I also need a trigger (65012) and magnets (17050) to ring bells and whistles?  And also can I turn off the whoosh sound on the 650001 unit and only trigger the bells and whistle sound with the magnet?  Or is there a better way with a sound car?  This kind of stuff gets really expensive...$170 or so just for a bell and whistle! Hope someone can explain to a newbee.

Maybe someone here can help; but you'll get much more advice on the Garden Railways Magazine forum.

I agree that you'll probably be far better off posting your question on the "Garden Railways" magazine forum, with is also one of Kalmbach's websites.  There are far more LGB enthusiasts there than here.

I own a lot of LGB trains, but none of the ones in my current collection are equipped with sound.  The sound-equipped items I previously had were very satisfactory--superb, even--but those were locomotives from LGB's higher-end offerings.  I'm just not certain what the features or quality might be on some of the starter set models, but I'm sure the folks who frequent the "Garden Railways" forum will be able to provide good, up-to-date input.

A freind of mine has an LGB set with sound. You just glue the magnets on top of the track and as the engine goes over them ,the bell or whistle sounds. You set the magnet to the right for one and to the left for the other.I really don't remember which is which but it ia a very simple process. We made it so the whistlw sounds approaching the station and the bell goes on as it leaves.

Actually, you don't have to glue the magnets--they just snap onto the track between the ties.  You can take them off and reposition them to your heart's content.
