what activates the lionel 2466wx whistle in its tender? i only see the coupler contact.

DC current.  Closes the points on relay.  Relay entergizes the AC motor and it turns.

yes...rollers pick up the current from tracks middle rail and sent to relay....2 relay contacts meet and current activates the motor and spins the motor...spinning a little fan with wings on it inside the whistles plastic or diecast box and air rushes out of holes and thus making the sound...thanks, jeff
