MTH Shay Elk River
Posted by Fred Bear on Saturday, February 10, 2007 9:37 AM
Howdy all, does anyone know if my MTH Elk River Shay has a battery that must be recharged periodically? Does running the train recharge the battery? How long can a battery stay in the engine without being run, without it hurting the engine? Thanks to all, Jake

MTH has 2 systems using a battery. The older version is protosound 1, and some of them have known to scramble the processor when the battery is low. Protosound 2 also has a battery, but it won't damage the electronics if it runs low. However they do need a charged battery (both systems) to work properly and it will be recharged when running above 12 volts or so. Locosound doesn't have a battery.

A battery can stay in the engine about 5 years before it's not able to hold a charge anymore and that is only for the Nicad type battery's. Nimh type batteries have a much better performance and will last several years longer. Note that both batteries will have to be recharged BEFORE operating the engine though, since both batteries loose their charges within a few months after use.
