Voltage Set for DCS?

I've wired the 2nd loop and inside loop connected to that loop in a spider style. Connected to the TIU and to the post war Z. What will I need to set the voltage at for best performance? Thanks to all, Jake

For most can motored command equipped locos, 16 volts is usually more than enough and improves the life span of lighted rolling stock  (passenger cars, caboose, etc.).

Question is, do I have to add an additional power source to the TIU on the variable output? Fixed #1 is wired for the Shay, it's working fine, but in order to add a Track, do I need to add additional  power to the 2nd Fixed input/output? Thanks, Jake

Jake, as long as your Z has enough wattage(i'm not familar with the Z), it should be ok to use it to power the 2nd channel.  My little layout only has two loops, and my Z4000 is more than enough.

I believe that if you go to the OGR board and look in the "Command Control" section, there is a thread on DCS.  I suggest this as they have a discussion on how MTH has the power up to 20, I believe that they had replaced the bulbs with higher wattage, and that they did a few other things, but they got very good results by doing so.  Then, of course, come back to the CTT forum as it is a friendlier place in MHO.

I have sent you a reply to the e-mail you sent.

One of the questions I think he is asking here is the need for a second transformer to power the Var Input #1. I told him he can bridge from the transformer connected to Fixed Input #1 over to Variable Input #1, noting that the TIU MUST have power to Fixed Input #1 just to power the TIU itself. I also explained that at some point as his layout grows, he may need to add additional transformers, and making sure he keeps the amperage through each TIU input/output set to 10 amperes or less. Also suggested he fuse (at 10 amps- or use 10 amp circuit breakers) between the TIU and track and transformers on each side of the input/outputs.

Voltage should be set at 18 volts if you want best performance for operating couplers, etc.
