New 2-8-0 MTH loco question ?
Posted by njalb1 on Friday, February 2, 2007 10:35 AM
Just bought a 2-8-0 MTH with Loco-Sound System. Can I convert this to Proo sound 2 and how expensive would it be?   Thanks!   Al

NJAL:

According to MTH's website, you can upgrade.

$150.00 if you are an MTH club member.

$180.00 if you are not a member.

Regards,

The $150.00 / $180.00 price is for  the kit only. you still have to install it or have it installed, about another $125.00. Cheaper to buy new engine with PS2 already in it. The last 2-8-0 that I bought last year, was only $165.00 at a show.

Tom is correct about this.  For example Just Trains is advertising the whole freight set with track, transformer, engine equipped with PS2 & freight cars for $259.00.  You can often find these engines for sale from set breakups for well under $200.00.  That is how I got mine.

I believe it's a`board swap to go from locosounds to ps2 if the particular engine also came with ps2.No upgrade kit needed.
I was going to do this with a PRR M1a I had but have since sold it.

The board swap is also the case with proto1 units. You'll get a whole new board, only the potmeter and the on/off switch is needed from either the locosound or ps1 equipment.

If you want to add ps2, you'll need the upgrade kit. If you can find a proto1 unit, you could however add better sounds and an operating coupler for less, but it won't operate in digital mode. (sometimes you fnd usedproto1 boards for cheap on ebay, but you need to be lucky with that to 1 find it, and 2 in working order..)
