1948 Lionel 726 Berkshire, motor mount shim??
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 9:40 AM
I have the 671M-1 motor in this unit. I have read that a 25 tooth gear wheel [worm wheel] is installed. Does anyone know if a motor mounting shim is required in the 1948 model?  Did Lionel compensate for this change and no shim was required "or" was a motor shim included? [prior models in 1946 had a 23 tooth gear that required a shim, if the gear was changed up to a 25 tooth]

The 726 Berk I am restoring doesn't have one or it was lost. I have searched nearly everywhere to locate one,.. just in case. Or,..does anyone know what thickness this shim measured?

I may have to make one if the gears will not mesh.

Lionel's original part number is: 726-127

Thanks    Granpa

Some berks from 1947-1949 have the shim, and some don't.  However, if the wheels turn reasonably freely with the motor screwed to the frame, you don't need the shim.  If the wheels lock, you need the shim.  I wouldn't install the shim unless it was absolutely necessary because it could make the mesh too shallow, and the worm wheel would become stripped.  Do you have the service manual?  It has the procedure for mounting the motor.  If you need help, please let us know.

Yes I do have a Greenburg manual.  Reading the manual made me wonder if I had lost the shim and searching for one was fruitless.  I'll delay any shim work, the gear threads look like-new at both ends.  We'll see and hope that all works well.

I'm waiting for parts to arrive and will post a before and after picture of my project.  [posting pictues will be a project for me, but I'll figure it out]

Thanks AGAIN Jim,   appreciate the guidance.

Glad I could help.  If you have further questions, please feel free to ask or send me an email.  That is going to be a nice berk!
