On30 layout

Hey guys, I am constructing an On30 D&RGW narrow gauge layout on a 5x9 board. I have a collection of very nice locomotives and I think they need a roundhouse.  The only problem is, I'm afraid a roundhouse would be too big and make my layout look unrealistic.  should I or should I not?

How long is your largest loco.  You may be able to use an HO turntable with some modifications.

my longest locomotive is 1 ft. 4 in. long.

Looks like you would need a 120' HO turntable which is pretty large.  Walthers site lists one in that size, not in stock.  I'm not an HO guy, you might ask about this on the MR forum.

I was just looking at a diamond scale HO scale 120' grider Turntable kit, would that fit my locomotives?

You can use one of the longer HO turntables (depending on what your longest/largest On30 locomotives measure), but you'll still need an O scale roundhouse.  The On30 models, though small compared to most O scale/gauge models, are nevertheless O scale (1:48).  An HO turntable (open type, with no structures above the table) will work with On30 because the track gauge for On30 is the same as the gauge used for HO.  But you will need to go with O scale for the "garage."

I used a Walthers HO turntable for my On3 locos. I did build a new superstructure from stripwood.

Several craftsman kits of NG prototype round- and engine houses exist, though they are pricey.  They won't be quite as large as standard gauge O scale buildings, but they will be quite a bit larger than HO.

Not sure if this may help but what about using an S gauge building for the roundhouse and an H.O. turntable as that is what I think the On30 track is.

S Helper may have something in S gauge.

You could run a track off the main board on to a separte board just big enough for a round house and turn table. This may help with not over crowding your layout.

Bowser makes turn tables in a couple sizes.
