Need Help Restoring a 1948 Turbine number 2020 with single worm drive!!
Posted by lionel2 on Friday, January 26, 2007 1:35 PM
I recently bought a lionel postwar 2020 turbine that is in need of restoring...anyone know the proper steps to restoring both the 2020 and the 6020W tender....parts...i think i can get most of the parts online and from my dealer...but i am worried because the screw holes to attach the boiler to the chassie are stripped as well as both truck mounting screw holes...the screws are fine but the holes are a problem...and how do you attach the apron (steps) to the back of the boiler??...a little bit of rust i am sure i can get rid of it gently...any more advice or tips on how i should restore the 2020??..thanks

A great engine, was my first.  One suggestion would be to get a copy of Greenberg's manual of Lionel trains 1945-1969.  This is the service manual and if you are going to work on Post War trains, it is a must have.  Also, if you go to Olsen's Toy Train Parts, they have a library of diagrams on older pieces, they also have most parts.

To your problem with the stripped screw holes in the boiler, are they completely stripped?  Could you get by with a little BLUE Locktite?  You can also try some old "fix-it" methods of partially filling the holes with some kind of muffler weld, or something and re-tapping the holes.

Another idea would be to find a "Junker" on Ebay and try to salvage the boiler off it.

Good Luck,

dennis

Hello Lionel2-   Jeff Kane at the Train Tender should have the parts you need to restore your Turbine. I've had great success in getting parts from him & another place to try is Dr.Tinker's Toy Train Parts & both of the above have websites as well. Your stipped out holes should be re-tapped & Dr.Tinker can help you out with this as well. As far as the Apron Steps go., the place they fit into the frame should be drilled & tapped for new screws to hold the Apron on. Ask Dr. Tinker about the Paint & Decal's you'll need for the Boiler or you can have him do the work for you. Hope this helps & Take Care.

For the boiler-to-frame attachment, I suggest drilling and tapping the 6-32 screw holes deeper and replacing the original screws with longer ones.  The rear screws are .75 inch long; and there appears to be ample room for a 1-inch screw in the boiler.  The place for the front screw has less additional metal; but you could drill it through, since the smokebox-door casting covers the place where it would break through.  You would need to grind the new screw flush to keep it from interfering with the grounding clip.  You could also countersink the top surface for a 6-32 nut instead of retapping.

The truck-attachment screws are more of a problem.  An 8-32 version of that shoulder screw would be an ideal solution if it exists.  Otherwise, you could build one up with an 8-32 pan-head screw and short pieces of nested 7/32- and 3/16-inch K&S brass tubing.  There seems to be no reason not to drill the holes through, to make the tapping easier.

One thing you could try is to fill the stripped holes wiith JB Weld.  Once it is dry, drill the holes to the original depth and tap the holes.  Call Jeff ( The Train Tender), he should have the screws you need.  The easiest way to deal with the boiler problem would be to find another boiler from 1947 or later.  You could use a boiler from a 2020, 671, or 681.  Just be sure it has the E unit slot.  You could attach the apron by drilling holes in the frame where the studs used to be, and secure the new apron with pop rivets inserted from the bottom of the frame.

I pulled the apron off of my 681 in order to clean the rust and reblacken it(I used gun blue to get the black color back). To reattach it, I drilled and tapped a pair of 6-32 screw holes where the studs used to be. The studs are sized such that when you drill the holes, you'll leave just enough of a lip for the apron to rest on and let you align it properly.

This fix works great and is nearly invisible with casual observation.

OK..i got it all....cause yesterday i bought a 2020 but a double worm drive just to add to my collection..its in EX+ condition..nothing needs to be done to that...but as for the single worm drive 2020 that i have to restore i think i will buy some parts and follow my greensburg book...the repair manual book....I think I might have to have my hobby shop drill the holes and tap them cause i have no tools like that...I did find the front boiler screw that mounts the boiler to chassie...got it for free from my hobby shop....on that 2020 double worm drive i picked it up for 20% off for $200 plus tax $214 total...it was a steal...its such a cool engine...no i have all the turbines...2020 both double and single worm drives...671 single worm....681...and 682 white stripe beauty with linkage....After i finish my 2020 restoration i will look for a 736 berkshire to restore....hope i find one for under $130....thanks for the help any other comments or help...please add..thanks

There are 2 more Turbine models from the postwar era you didn't mention that you might want to hunt down too - the 671 double-worm drive, and the 671RR.

I forgot about the Electronic set... that makes 3!

The 671 RR is a 1952-only engine.  It's not the Electronic.  It's a 681 w/o Magnetraction.
