One for the Marx collector!

Wow! I had no idea that Marx sets get this kind of money. I know the Disney sets sell for quite a bit when I see them on e-bay. I've never seem this one before. Quite a rarity I guess. Check it out.

Paul,

As a Marx collector, I’m not sure myself why the set has hit this price level. It’s a very unique set. Seems to be in great condition. I’ve never seen the car with rails before. Do you know, is it authentic? Marx deserves more credit than given by most train collectors. Of course, I would have hoped I would have had all the Marx I wanted before that happened. Big Smile [:D]

Side bar; did you check out the bidders history. Seems Ebay just might be finally waking up. Might be the lost sales, due to lack of confidence of buyers, in Ebay's desire to clean up their house. Hope to see the feedback system cleaned up next.

That is one cool set. The condition is amazing, and the fact that it still has all the paper with it... wow! That would have been a kid's dream come true on one Christmas morning in the 1930s! Thanks for drawing our attention to this, Paul. Smile [:)]

Marx did make a rail car, and the one in the set appears to be genuine (those do appear to be Marx rails in it) but of course I don't know enough to be able to validate it just from those pictures. The wheel car and spool car are also things you don't see often. The red NYC tender isn't common, and I've never seen a red CP locomotive before.

Of course the 552 gondola and 556 caboose are very common.

Given what I know about the going rate for some of the other less-common Marx variations, clearing the $1,000 mark doesn't seem out of line to me. $300-$400 wouldn't surprise me for the locomotive/tender combination, and $100 each for the rare cars and we're already into the $700 neighborhood. Most common boxes only add about 10% to the set value, but when you have a rare set, the box can be worth more than the stuff that came in it.

I usually tell people $100 is a good starting point for a boxed Marx set, but this is far from your ordinary Marx set. This'll be an interesting one to watch.

All of the pieces except the 552 gondola and 556 caboose are pretty uncommon. The wrecker car qualifies as uncommon, the rest probably really could be called rare.

And I just looked again at the rail car. The rails on a rail car should be uncrimped. These are.

That is simply amazing!  How I would love to have that set!  Condition and rarity aside, it sure is one snazzy-looking train.  The CP locomotive just might be my favorite type of Marx engine and it sure looks good in red.  Even with inflation, it still boggles the mind to think that you could have gotten all of this for only $4.98.
