Recommendation on which connectors for SPDT switch
Posted by Birds on Sunday, January 14, 2007 3:01 PM

The SPDT switches that I am looking at come in the following connector styles:

  • solder
  • quick connect
  • screw terminal

What would  people recommend and why?

Here are my thoughts:

I was thinking of going with screw terminals because of the overall ease of working on the wiring.  Tight connections electrical connections when using spades on the end of the wires.  Easy to undo and rewire if needed.

Solder is a slightly permanent solution.  So if I redid anything more work would be involved here.

I also like the idea of quick connectors.  They are easy to crimp onto the end of wire and I have had good experiences using them in other projects.  The one thing I don't like about them is that sometimes they are hard to remove and I end up putting more strain on the wire than I like.

Thanks,

Chris

I'd go with the quick connectors, as it may be hard to loosen the screws when you have a full built up control panel due to the switch spacing on the panel.  With the quick connectors, if it doesn't come loose with a firm pull, then a pair of pliers works well.  HTH!

Just make sure that the crimp on connectors are a standard size and readily available.

Quick connectors are great, I use them when working on almost everything.

Solder.  This will allow you to use a wider variety of switches, especially the smaller ones.  Since they are relatively robust, they are good for perfecting soldering techniques.
