1033, yes the old 1033.  If you need more power, I'd say the MRC transformers.  Not too knowledgeable about the Williams ones.  The good Lionel and MTH ones go for a little more $$$.

You could also look for a 1044-- it's the updated version of a 1033, has the same outputs. Price on Ebay approx. 35-50$.  MTH's Z750 and Z1000 go for 50-100$. For any postwar transformer, make sure that the power cord is not damaged, brittle, etc. Also, PW transformers should have a fuse in between it and the track. Inline fuseholders and fuses are available from Radio Shack or any auto parts stores.

The 1033 (I have 3 of these) and the 1044 (have one of these) are both good transformers.  Just keep in mind that they do not have bell buttons so will not operate the bell if you acquire newer engines.

I've got a 1053 (it has a whistle button) I got at a train show for $10. I saw these from other dealers for $10-$20. Works quite well.

I have the new Williams and after some months of use it appears to be working fine. The first one had to go back to JustTrains due to a defective cord.

The cord, which is thick and stuff and has a TERRIBLE connector, is the Achilles heel of this transformer. It's simply awful. But if you can get past that factor the transformer delivers a lot of bang for the buck - I got mine for $99.00. The brake feature is nice when you are running conventional and the transformer works fine with TMCC too.
