to the forum !! You have an 0-4-0 electric type engine, made from 1913 - 1923. Does your eng. have sliding doors ? If so, then it was made before 1918 ! Also made in 7 other colors .
Hope this helps some !
Thanks, John
The #42 is actually a 0-4-4-0 and, short of Lionels #6 and #7 steamers was that company's premier form of motive power in Standard Gauge. It originally was made as the #1912 loco in the year 1912 but when it was offered in set #42 that number began being used on the loco. First year square cab #42's are quite rare although I'm guessing what you have is the later round cab #42. Numerous changes throughout its 11 year run make it pretty easy to pinpoint the year of manufacture. The last 2 years of production saw it fitted with twin motors as the #42 morfed into the classic period #402. I can only assume the cars that came with your set are the large 18-19-190 series passenger cars.

Dear John,
I have a few pictures of the engine to help us identify. Just want to confirm we are talking about the same train. I'm going to try and email these pictures to you, if possible. If I can't do you think you can give me your email address outside trains.com?
Thank you,
Pete
Tried to send pictures, but cannot
Thank you, Pete
Hi Pete !! I sent you my email address through here !!
Oh, do you want me to post them on the thread here also ?
FWIW, there's a 42 set on eBay right now: Click here.

pizzalover823@aol.com,
Depends on the color of the locomotive and the condition of it, the number 42 can bring from $300.00 to $2000.00 but depends on condition(what shape the paint is in and how much damage if any to the locomotive) and the color according to Greenberg's pocket price guide. Original track for standard gauge may bring some money but not sure, also depends on condition of the track. The transformer may bring some decent money if it works.
