Ride a model railroad as the engineer (video included)
Posted by perry1060 on Thursday, December 28, 2006 12:10 PM

Hi all,

Here's a five minute movie where I attempt to put you in the engine as the driver. This is my first attempt at a video online, so let's hope it works. Please click the below link.

A few new shots...

Pretty Awesome!

I always enjoy seeing your layout.  There's a lot to see in the small space you've created.

The trains waiting at the blocks from a track view is my favorite.

Great video Perry!

Except I dunno if that engineer is following the rules... Isn't he a bit too close to that passenger train on the same mainline? lol...

I liked that a lot and I am on dialup too, but it was worth the wait!

This aspect of the hobby really makes one think about both the potential of a layout as a film set and the issues it raises about the 'real life' viewpoint.

For example, it might be a good idea, knowing that one is going to film it, to consider the scenery as modular units that can be swapped around whilst leaving the trackwork in place, so as to have the ability to change scenes.

Also there's some interesting details I have noted like the sounds that the wheels make and the motion of the cars swaying, suggesting ideas to emphasize or alter these characteristics.

All of which is a compliment because it looked so good that it made me run it again and again to think of how I could get the same kind of quality albeit with scenes of my own. It made me realize I could recreate some very happy memories of my youth without having to actually build a scale model of the entire line but merely by making sections like changing the scenery in a theatre.

Thankyou for some thought provoking input.

Perry,
Thank you for sharing that!  I sent the link to my wife and she enjoyed it as well.  Looks like I have to find a MRR camera now too!

I don't know who has the bug worse, her or me! Big Smile [:D]

Hopefully it is her so she can buy more stuff!

One suggestion - from wife - you should have changed your camera train to the other loops on the layout to show it all off!

Great video! I really enjoy these - how did you make it - with a camera on a flat car. I love the sound. I second the suggestion to see the other loops too.

Hi all,

If I remember correctly, 'youtube' limits file uploads to 100 meg, and that's why my 30-minute movie only shows a 5-minute clip.

In the the full version, the trains runs the entire track multiple times and provides a better view. It's also a better picture quality then what's viewable online, but I'm not sure why?

Doug, yes I put a Sony handy cam directly on a flat car, and held it in place w/rubber bands. The camera writes directly to a 3" DVD disc, so it's a real snap to finalize and display quickly. I wish you could see the entire 30-minute DVD. Smile [:)]

I love those video's and on a special layout like this one it's even better to whatch. Awesome Perry! Now I know why the inside of the tunnels are also plastered and detailled!

Perry,
I am about to open my business's website.  I may be able to host it for you, but people would have to download it, not view it live (viewing live would be huge bandwidth).  If interested email me and when live I'll send you the info to upload it.

Thanks Perry,

Enjoyed the video. I'm also on dial-up, but was truely worth the wait, (had to eat dinner anyway).  Love to see the entire video sometime.

Just amazing Perry. Your scenic work just blows me away. How about breaking up the 30 minute so we can see more?
