k line k-9050 transformer ???

I have an o/o27 gauge k-line Steam freight set and was wondering on the transformer why it  has  ac terminals on it for connecting it to k-952B controller and then the track yet in the manual with the set it states the motor in the locomotive has a dc motor.  So what output is the transformer ac or dc???

It probably has a DC can motor with electronic PC board which converts the AC on the track to DC to run the motor.

I guess im asking this because if i purchased a new loco to run with my set or used the tranformer for my HO stuff  i do not want to burn something up.

Is all 0 gauge 3 rail equipment run on standard dc???

Gilligan,  do not use your transformer that you used for HO on an O Gauge set.  There are exceptions, but few.   I don't know what would happen, but I don't want to encourge you to find out.  Most generally the three rail models have AC current in the track.

I am not aware of any 3-rail Lionel-style locomotive that will not run on DC, although the whistle might blow uncontrollably.  Until modern times, they were intended to run on AC or DC.  There are some modern locomotives whose manufacturers warn against using DC; but I am skeptical that they would be damaged by it.  There have been some modern locomotives built that run only on DC.  However, in any case, the 12 volts used for HO is a bit low for these trains; and an HO supply may not be able to put out enough current anyway.  So, to be safe and to get enough voltage and current to move the train at a reasonable speed, take Buckeye's advice and use a transformer, not an HO supply.
