The most commonly modeled scales are:
O - 1:48
S - 1:64
HO - 1:87
N - 1:160
Z - 1:220

There are several scales that run on what is commonly calle G gauge track, popular for outdoor use.

Try looking at the all gauge train infomation at the below site. A lot of good information on every gauge plus some great specific info. Some are a little dated but good stuff.

You should just go to a hobby or train shop and compare first hand.  See the different gauges in person and  check the costs.  This will give you a better idea.

In addition to the information that folks have already given you I'd suggest that you pick up a copy of two magazines -- Model Railroader ( relates mainly to HO, N, and Z gauges) and Classic Toy Trains (mainly O gauge with some S).  Each magazine has lots of ads by the major retailers that will give you some idea as to what is available and at what prices.  The sponsor of this forum, Kalmbach, also publishes books about getting started in the hobby.
