info needed on a lionel 678 hudson "picture added"

i'm looking for some info about a lionel 678 4-6-4. i think it's a mpc era, but not real sure.

i've never seen one like it. it's red with a silver nose. i'm not sure if it's a lionel paint scheme or weather someone has painted it up like this. if it is a lionel paint scheme, how rare are they?

i have a lionel cole bros world toured circuis tender that looks to be the same color. i had never heard of it before either. are they a pair?

any info would be greatful. thanks

It looks to me like it may for the Alton Limited set that Lionel made during the MPC years. The colors, as I recall, are burgundy red and silver.

I saw that one too. Looks to be a custom paint on an old postwar engine. But if it matches a tender you have make a bid on it. This guy has a very nice collection hes auctioning. Good luck.

That loco there is a 1976 # 8603 Hudson type, based on the postwar 665/2055/2065 "baby" Hudsons.

The clues are the boiler casting(the smaller of the "babies" - not the 646/2046/2056), lack of a feedwater heater, and the Baldwin disc type bright "turned rims" unique to this engine.  Original color is all black w/ silver boiler front.  The original tender is a S-O-S 736W type(rounded) lettered for Chesapeake & Ohio. The right side rear drive wheel should have a traction tire on it. 8603:

The very similar all black 8206 from 1972-1975 has feedwater heater, the Baldwin disc wheels, & a NYC lettered tender w/ whistle & S-O-S, but the rims are not turned bright. 8206:

The 8600 NYC Hudson from 1976 has white painted wheel rims, is based on the 646/2046/2056 casting & mechanism, all black w/ silver boiler front, and Magnetraction(first re-issue after 1969). 8600:

Another note, on this model, the ornamental whistle & bell are switched in their positions... probably missplaced when they were put back after the repaint.

it's not a Alton Limited 4-6-4. their like a 2046 or 2056, this is more like a 2065. i bought it. it's a mpc era because it has a wire for the sound of steam tender (which my cole bros circus 2046 style tender has).

did lionel ever put out a cole bros circus set? i've seen cars marked with that as well.

I love those post war baby Hudsons! I've got 2 2056s and a 2055. Will at some point get a 2065/665. I would love to see Lionel re-issue them all. Lionel's decision makers ought to think of including a post war replica line that includes many of the great locomotives of the past, like Williams does. Who better than the real deal?
