How to open up MTH Railking passenger car?
Posted by Kerrigan on Thursday, September 21, 2006 10:43 AM

How does one open up the MTH Rail King passenger car, the diner, to change the light bulb?

It appears one takes out the body screws, and then somehow opens the top by releasing four plastic tabs.  Here is the trouble.  Can't get the tabs to release and afraid of breaking them off.

How does one get inside these cars without damaging them?

Thank you!

Some of the cars have access "panels" in the roof vents.  These pop off to reveal addtional screws.  You may want to check the MTH web site for possible repair manual diagrams for your specific cars.

The first time you remove the roofs it's a bit tough. Remove the two screws from the bottom of the car. Its the two screws that are recessed and you need to insert the screwdriver into the bottom of the car.

From one side only get a fingernail under the roof edge and pry up. I find its easier if you pry towards the end of the car not in the middle. It should pop up and give you aceess. Alot of times the bulbs are just loose and a little jimying will get them to light.

Good-luck

From previous threads, it seems that Railking passenger cars come in a number on configurations. With mine, you remove the bottom screws, take the ends of the car in each hand, and twist in opposite directions. The roof should pop-off. Joe
