MTH Smoke unit
Posted by wct111 on Monday, September 18, 2006 8:19 PM
I have a 4-6-4 NYC dreyfuss hudson steam locomotive, 30-1113-1 with an intermittent smoke problem. Heating element works fine. The problem seems to be with the fan. Some times it works for a while then quits. I did resolder the plug and got it to work initialally.
Could it be the fan or perhaps a problem with a componet on the board on the smoke unit.

Check the wick. If it looks burnt try realigning it inside the wick housing.  Also, try resetting to factory settings, and if all else fails, call MTH.

I have had problems with the groud wire to the smoke unit on MTH diesels.Loosen it and tighten it again. This seems to work on them.

Wick is fine. I bought new ones to try but old ones are ok. The heating element works fine. It is the fan itself.

Check and see if the fan is pushed to far on the motor shaft and is hitting the casting. Also check and see if the fan motor needs oiling. There is two very small screws inside the casting that holds the fan motor in place. The fan is a light press fit onto the shaft of the fan motor. It can be pulled of the fan motor shaft with a pair of needle noise  pliers.

Hope this helps.
