Looking for screws
Posted by tex702 on Monday, July 17, 2006 4:13 PM
Okay guys, we have all heard it before.  I am looking for screws to screw down gargrave track to a wooden stickbuilt trestle.  I have been told to use #2 or #3 flathead wood screws 3/4" long.  Well thats a little to long for my needs I need them 1/2" long.  I have been told to contact O Atlas and they would have what I needed.  No such luck.  They want to sell me some screws and they dont even know what size they are.  The part number they gave me was 6094.  O Atlas says they are track screws.  I have worked a very long time on this trestle and I will be darned if I will let some unknown person sell me track screws that seem to be three inches long and round heads.  Does anyone know where I might get this size screw?  I have tried Ace Hardward, Home Depot, Fastenal even Dills Industrial Supply.  They all act like these are going to be very hard to get.  There has got to be a place somewhere where these screws can be bought?  Any suggestions?.  Thanks

You can get them from Micromark. They have all kinds of small screws. Look under hardware, then wood screws. Good-luck.

Paul is probably right, I forgot about Micro-Mark !! Here are the ones I use on Gargraves track. I got them at a small hardware store a couple years ago. Busy Beaver, I think  I use a the orange tool, countersink, to get them down even with the tie, then paint the screw black. I show 2 sizes here, 1/2 & 5/8. I also have some 3/8, no good !

Hope this helps !

The Atlas track screws are 3/4" long and somewhere between #2 & #3 to my eye.

Another source of screws of any size you can imagine is McMaster-Carr.  They are an industrial supply house but as near as I can tell, anyone with a credit card can buy from them.  http://www.mcmaster.com/  It might take a while to wade through their on line catalog.

I have used Home Depot with great success for the correct track screw with one humorous side note.  My order was delayed due to a security check to see why I was ordering a couple hundred of these small sheet metal screws.  Seems I became a national security risk in the minds of Homeland Security.  Had to end up signing an affadavit of my intent.

Go figure, huh????
