I have been searching the web for 2 day's looking for info on a train set I just aquired. And no luck so far I hope my search will end here.
I'm looking for info on a lionel set.......Age,value,collectabilty,parts...ect...
Locamotive 233 with a 233w,tank car 6465,cabooes 6257&6017 ect...
any help you can provide would be great thanx[?]

I use Ebay to find the age and value of many items.
A good condition 233 Loco and 233W tender sold for $71 on 8/31/03.
The seller said the set was only made in 1961 &1962.
Do a search on Ebay completed auctions using model # and lionel.
Ebay is a much more current judge of value than any old price guide.

Greenberg's Pocket Price Guide confirms the '61-'62 dates,. The 2002 edition listed the value, Steam 2-4-2
w/ 233W Tender only, as $95 exc. & $55 good.

There are actually 4 different Lionel tank cars that carry the number 6465. The one that corresponds with the date of your engine are the green Cities Service (60-62) which is worth $14 good and $30 excellent, which was made from 1960-62. The others are Lionel Lines (59, 63-64) which in orange is worth $5 good, $14 excellent and in black is worth $10 good, $26 excellent, Gulf (58) which in grey is worth $10 good, $23 excellent and in black is worth $25 good, $60 excellent and Sunoco (48-56) which is worth $5 good, $14 excellent. The 6257 caboose (48-56 and 63-64) is worth $3 good, $9 excellent. The 6017 caboose (51-62) is worth $3 good, $7 excellent. Cabooses are usually amoung the most common of Lionel cars and usually aren't worth a whole lot, but there are a lot of rare cabooses too. If there are other cars in your set give me the numbers for them and I'll give you specific values for them.

I have watched E-bay and use them as an indicator. However, Im very suspicious of descriptions and repos and painted, replaced parts etc.
Would anyone care to weigh in with their thoughts and opinions, dos and don'ts. I've watched e-bay for about a year now, but yet to bid on anything, fearing what I might end up with, or what I might not not end up with ;-).
I have put ads in paper, and with patience have auqired a couple of sets. Its fun and you get to see the product as well as the people. I will attempt same this winter again. Also any do's or donts with that process. Thanks. Greg

One wonders why you and others don't invest in some reference books and subscribe to toy train mags? I am new to O Gauge trains but have spent a lot buying reference books. They are educational and quite interesting. And they are a good investment to be sure. Ted.
