Indy Children's Museum & Trains

Those visiting Indianapolis in the near future--stop over at the Indy Children's Museum. They have an awesome Aristocraft (large Scale) train layout that's really sharp, and windows of collectible toy trains from Lionel, Carlyle & Finch, etc. I saw my first standard gauge roundhouse there today. Really nice stuff.

I also saw my first Jersey Blue Comet (Standard Gauge and Original) that I've ever seen.

Check it out.

Is the "O" gauge layout they use to have not there any longer? It was a beauty as I remember. Also remember comments about the work necessary to maintain the locomotives. BIG job. No longer there?

Very best, Mike

The Lionel layout is gone or in hiding. The new Aristocraft on takes up two areas and is also suspended above the walkway. The Lionel material has been shelved behind glass cases. I didn't notice anything about maintenance, but there was a replica of a real steamer. Little in the way of info or writing on the trains. I guess a train layout speaks for itself.

Probably not enough volunteers. This is a problem in other museums with model railroads I have visited in the past year.

To all,

The big O-gauge layout has been gone for several years. They used to have all the prewar stuff in nice display cases with descriptions of the major pieces. Now they have some of the pieces on display without explanation. It is kind of sad for those of us who remember the big layout. Some of the TCA people who have been part of the Indy scene for a long time remember when there a standard gauge operating layout, but that was before I can recall.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana
