the thing the were saying is that the vibration of the o scale wood constanly keep the n scale derailing but there has to be a way that i can keep that from happenning. if there is no way i'm not trying to sale my trains on this forum but i would like to sale my n scale collection as a whole if your interested contact me through my e-mail at thatboy37@hotmail.com . but i'm hoping that i can get it all running and want have to sale. cause my n scale collection is and was my first love for model trains because of the detail and the size being that you can get more on a layout rather than less o scale on a layout. help me here if you can to see if i can get it all running and not have to sale my n scale collection. again thanks before hand for any comments and hints.

Very impressive inventoy![bow]

I have NO N-scale experience but I find it hard to believe that the vibrations of an O-scale train would cause an N-scale train to derail. I would suggest that you setup a small temporary layout which has some of both scales and run the trains at a fast speed. Set it up on material that is similar to what you want your final layout to be on...like 4x8 plywood. The floor will probably be too sturdy. If it turns out that they are right, I'm sure you can still fix the problem by making your bench work and table top heavier and more sturdy...but then you may have the noise problem to deal with. Might be a catch 22 situation.

Let us know what you end up doing and how it turns out.

You can certainly operate N scale (or any other scale) and O on the same layout if you choose to. You're getting what I feel is bum advice from those dealers, for whatever reason.

Although I personally would have no interest in operating the two very different sizes on the same layout (I used to be very involved in N scale), I would have no hesitation about doing so if I was so inclined. All you need is a sturdy framework to begin with, which you should plan on in any case.

If you do decide to sell your N scale, you'll probably have a somewhat difficult time finding a buyer for the entire lot at one time. You have a mix of roadnames there, and most hobbyists who might be interested would probably want only items from specific roads.

I have about 15 mostly new-in-box Conrail diesels in N scale myself that I've been trying to sell (as a single lot) for about six years now, without any great success. So my personal feeling is that there's not a great market out there at the present time for N or any other scale.

But I still think those dealers you're talking to are giving you some bad advice.

One idea that I have seen, a modeller used an N scale set around a fair setting, and put O scale figures as if they were riding the fair train.

I've had a "N" train "kiddy ride" running on my "O" layout for over a year with no problem, and the circle of track is VERY tight. Joe

An N scale layout would be realistic and ideal to use with an O scale layout using the principle of forced perspective.

Simply put the N scale layout in the background and shrink houses and trees from foreground to background and it will give a believable illusion of great depth. This has been done a lot by many modelers, one of whom even had an identical large and small train and mountains on either side of the layout. When the train disappeared into the tunnel, it then emerged smaller; of course being a different train but identical looking. Of course it would be hard to find an N scale toy train look.

Regarding .... N gauge You got to have a sturdy table that canot be jarred or shook because these small little trains will derail constantly. Make sure bench work is done properly. If you are thinking about running both gauges on the same layout hide your N gauge up in a mountain or some thing and keep it away from your 0 gauge. With all that room that you have you should not have any problem building a separate loop for your small trains.Again I stress that your bench work is very important. If I had the choice I would go with HO for secondary gauge to model.

The forced perspective idea sounds great. although what carnival would be complete without a train ride? I would find away to use both ideas.

I agree with the forced perspective idea, but what I think would work better than having the N scale in the background would be to have the N scale trains on a higher level. Having a layout with lots of mountains or a canyon and having the N scale trains high above the O scale would look good. I remember an article in Classic Toy Trains about a man with a layout that ran Standard, O, S and HO gauge trains all together. Each gauge was on a different level, with the largest on the bottom and the smallest on the top.
