Lionel Hobby Lobby sets
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, June 15, 2006 8:48 PM
I was at the local hobby lobby the other day and they have two lionel sets there for $125. One is a C&NW freight set and the other is and Amtrack Passenger set. I was just wondering if these sets might be worth looking into. They were up high on the shelf and i didn;t feal like pulling one down to look at it. Do they have fastrack? Are the locos just DC? what kind of tranformer do they have? I looked at eh current online lionel catalog and my coppy of last years catalog but i can't find the sets in there, so I', guessing they were just made for Hobby Lobby.

Kevin,

If you can obtain the "product number" of the set (which should be printed on the side of the box ), perform a Google or Yahoo search.

You will in all probability obtain additional information on that particular set, (i.e. when it was manufactured----the catalog it was first issued etc. etc.)

Please, Kevin, give use a more detailed description of these train sets made by Lionel for sale at the Hobby Lobby store.

These might be similar to the Lionel Wisconsin Central Train Sets made specifically for Menard's in 2004 and 2005. The main set was made in 2004 and the freight expansion pack was made in 2005.

Here's a 40 percent off coupon if you want it:

I think it would cover a train set.

Unless it is a sale price, HL will accept the coupon. I have found that they usually have a very high price on items, so that when you get a discount, it turns out to be a fair price. ie, they have a K-Line Plymouth with caboose for 179.00. I have also taken a Lionel catalog to the store and shown them a set with the Lionel MSRP almost $100.00 less than Hobby Lobby was selling it for. You can get deals, just make sure before buying.

Kevin,

I purchased a Lionel #31984 (uncataloged) C&NW Midwest Freight set from Hobby Lobby a couple of Christmas' ago. The set included an RS-3 diesel, a boxcar, a tank car, a caboose, an oval of FasTrack, and a 40W AC transformer.

The loco and rolling stock all are low-end (e.g., plastic rather than metal frames), but I knew that going in. The loco includes a three-position reverse, non-directional lighting, and a whistle. The whistle sounds really strange, but it's a hoot (sorry) when running the loco alongside a RailSounds loco.

The plastic model kit cupon won't work for model trains. However, Hobby Lobby often has all their model trains and supplies half price on other weeks. Click their website into your favorites and watch it weekly. Also watch their newspaper ads.
