Hello Iruleyou05! Your Tender had a Electronic sound-of -steam circuit board inside of it at one time which is why there is a Speaker inside. The following engines match this tender; 8204,8304,8800. They had a 4-4-2 wheel arraingment and were made for many years in the 70's and are not hard to find at all. Hope this helps.

Ok, i see that the sounds of steam synchronizes with the smoke unit. Does it do this by groung out whenver the metal piston comes up to puff the smoke? if so, i can install to and all to fit my usual engine, the 2026. Thanks.

Hello Iruleyou05! The sound system in your Tender is not compatible with a 2026. It is only compatible with the engines listed above as they had Smoke Generators that had a Copper contact connected to the Piston which pushes the smoke out of the stack and this is what made the chugging sound. A wire was connected to the Piston assembly & connects to a wire from the tender completing the circuit for the sound-of -steam to operate. So, if you want it to work. You'll have to locate one of the above engines.Take Care.

Sound of Steam Tenders were notorious for shorting out. The circuit board was mounted on foam that broke down and allowed the electronics to contact the frame. You might want to check it out before searching for or modifying an engine to go with it.
Sound of Steam is nothing like Trainsounds or Railsounds it's just an amplified white noise hiss that simulates a steam release.

Well, im quite a bit of a modder, so im going to retrofit my 2026 to fit it. Yes, trig, i saw that in another post before. But the circuit...what does it complete to...the frame of the engine?

I wish I could remember, it's been a long time since I worked on those. Greenberg used to make a Lionel repair manual that might help you with this. As I recall that came in sections with a binder. I don't know if it's still available.

Darn, anyone else know what circuit that completes? the lionel wiring diagram isnt much help...all it is, is a wire tjhat goes to the smoke unit..it just kinda stick it in the side.

Okay if I had to guess I'd look if the tender has a roller. If it does I'd put it on a track with low voltage and tap that lead to the ground and listen for a hiss.
What I think what Lionel did is contact that with a cam and switch or part of the smoke unit piston

Quit while you are a head.

BUY a copy of a train magazine, one for O Gayge and lay off ebay untill you get an idea of what is what.

Also you might get a starter set at a HOBBY SHOP and enjoy it.

AS to that tender, forget it, clip the wires and use it was is, you will be happier unless you are of the obsesive-compusive self destructive type like me.

By the way what is that a picture of?

Also, i love how you assume its frmo ebay. Apparently i cant have friends elsewhere that run across these things, or have them. And a am quite a tinkerer, and my 2026 is my most frquently used loco, so im going to make the best of it.

Also, trig, thanks, you are much help. Way to help me do what i want, not tell me what i want to do.

Iruleyou:

My very first Engine was the 2026, 1949 version with hand rails and nickle rims pressed on the drivers. It still runs today.
I'm a bit of a tinkerer myself. I can't pass a dumpster without looking inside, so I understand that getting some discarded thing working is a lot of fun . Good luck with your Sound of Steam. [^]

Iruleyou05,
I don't know if you have done this allready, but go to Lionel's website and look for the instruction manuals. They have them in pdf form online. You don't neccessarilly have to look up the 2026, just look up any engine with a sound of steam unit. I would suggest using "hudson" in the search catagory. Start going through the manuals and some of them have a wiring diagram (in the hudson section anyway), that should show you what you want to know.
I don't think installing the switch would be a very big deal. It works off the drive rods, and any switch should work. Even a railsounds switch would work. I have a Santa Fe warhorse hudson with basiclly the same switch as my 8900 Santa Fe FARR set.
When you get the tender, open it up first thing, and check the sound board to make sure it is insulated from the tender frame!! Replace the tape before trying to get it to work! The sound of steam is something if you have never heard, well... You just gotta hear it. It was quite an innovation for it's time, and I kinda like it, but of course, it isn't railsounds.

Awesome! Thank you for the suggestion. I just saw that all i have to do is have the switch or equivalent switch between open and chassis. This is great news. Its going to go alot easier as soon as i get this thing. [bow][:D]

Alright, found microswitches to trigger it...in my toolbox! Normally, i'd use these for a wide open throttle trigger for nitrous oxide, but now a model train! Im going to have the lever assembly that the psiton cup is moved by trigger it. This is going to be kool. For something that hardly cost me what a basic tender would have, and a spare part i had laying around, it'll be fun. Specailly since i get to make a bracket to mount it. I'll post some pictures when im done. Also, i'll cover my Tutorial on how to change your E-unit solonoid to DC to reduce noise for just pennies.

Fn stuff...also, im going to make a underglow kit for a train from LED's Thats dimms down a bit when the lights go out, seeing as they dont need to be AS bright.

Ok, got it today...the foam insulationm turned to dust and the speaker cone is bad
i'll us styrofoam and hop on over to radioshack for a new speaker. Altho, i did remove the board and test it with clip leads. It does work. Altho, the truck is missing its roller, but i will find another. Its a clever little setup too. Im happy i got it. I've got something to do tonight now :-D

OK, after a bit of experimenting, i noticed the wire that i thought went to the roller, actually heads to the wheels! Joy! so now all i have to do is get the little speaker for it! This is great news. Already removed the dust-like foam it had on the board, and replaced with styrofoam.

There's a double stick foam mounting tape that'll work. Real easy to use.

spray adhesive worked for me. Plus, i was able to salvage a speaker out of a old hess truck that was in shambles. So now i need to modify the loco [8D]

Will include pics in next post.

Ok, seems as my roller switch is a bit too big...now i need to find a mocroswitch..something like 3/8"x3/8"x1/4"deep....maybe its too small to find one? well..im gonna try to find the smallest momentary switch i can.
