Hi Rail wheel or scale wheels?

Over the past few years I have noticed that Mth is offering most of there trains in either high rail wheel or scale wheels. Whats the diffrence? Does one work better then the other? If I use atlas 3rail track can I run either type of wheel? What type of wheel is on engines with which you are given no choice? Any info would be great! thank you.

On Atlas 3-rail track, I'd use high rail or toy wheels.

Scale works best on 2-rail tracks.

Scale wheels have scale (aka really small) flanges. These look better but require extra care when installing track (i.e. no fudging on joints, curves, NO irregularities). You are better off using scale wheels on solid prototypically profiled rails than on traditional tubular.

Scale wheels are generally used with 2-rail track for the sake of realism. However, more is different than just the wheel itself. Whether the wheel trucks are designed for 3-rail AC power or 2-rail DC power is an essential concern. Unless you are specifically modeling in DC-powered 2-rail, stick with Hi Rail.

As far as not being given a choice, most likely these are Hi Rail offerings, as this is standard except for serious prototype 2-rail modelling. (I'm not hugely familiar with MTH, however; make sure you check it out with the company before you buy)
